SS Great Britain

SS Great Britain is a free outdoor exhibition on display in Bristol by the harbour to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the ship's return.

The name of the ship was SS Great Britain, the images on display show the ship's journey from Bristol to the Falklands. The exhibition is a collaboration with the Falklands Government showing the life there today.

"Celebrate the SS Great Britain's anniversary marking '50 Years Back Home in Bristol' by exploring this free outdoor exhibition on Bristol's harbourside.

The images show the incredible journey the SS Great Britain has taken, from beached wreck to Bristolian landmark. Enjoy Bristol's harbourside and discover the ship's story in this exhibition, depicting some of the most epic moments from her dramatic resue and homecoming.

The exhibition is presented in collaboration with the Falkland Islands Government, and includes photos of Falkland Islands life today, revealing where the SS Great Britain set from off on her remarkable homecoming journey.

It is part of a programme of activities this year celebrating the SS Great Britain's 50 years back home in Bristol."

Below are some images I have taken from visiting there on the 29th of October.

The images are displayed using wooden beams to create a structure, the beams were placed into holes in the ground, it appears like they have been placed there as the ground looks like it has been concreted recently. The structure had four images on each one, two on either side. They were quite large and the images were blown up to a large scale, each with explanations on either the left or right side, always on the outside of the photograph.

The images were on a type of board, from far away, I thought they were behind glass but then I thought that in the rain the water could seep behind the glass and damage the photographs, so I felt it, it was hard and almost felt plastic. Each structure was distanced quite far away from the other structure next to it, this exhibition, concidering the times that we are in, is a very safe exhibition, there is enough space and it is outdoors so  therefore people do not need to wear a mask and feel uncomfortable.

I enjoyed this experience because it was outside, I was in the elements it was raining a little bit, but I didn't mind as I really had a feel for the exhibition because it was on the harbour and it was all about the SS Great Britain's, journey home, it made me feel a connection to the story.

This exhibition also gave me a lot of inspiration, because of the current situation that we are facing with the virus, this means that not a lot of people will be able to attend an exhibition at one time, I feel like this would make people less inclined to want to come and visit the show. I thought perhaps it would be a great idea to have an outdoor exhibition of my own, or even mention it to the rest of the group and see how they feel about maybe having our end of year show outdoors some how, obviously it would take a lot of planning and thought and possibly face a few challenges to but in my opinion we would face many more if it was indoors because of health and safety due to the virus.

We have spoken as a group a little about the exhibition and people have said that we could possibly do it online, which is a good option, but I like having interaction, I enjoy people seeing my work and I enjoy seeing people view my work and seeing expressions people have, if we were to do it outdoors people wouldn't have to worry about wearing masks it they did not want to.

It is just an idea and I will suggest it to the rest of the group.
